About Paul

Above is a picture of PAUL EGO in 1983, aged 17.

17 is also how many years PAUL EGO has been doing comedy.

EGO’s first gig was in London in 1994 and upon returning to NZ in 1995 he soon became a regular sight on the pro-comedy skyline.

In 2000 PAUL EGO was given the BILLY T AWARD for outstanding commitment to NZ Comedy and in 2001 he was announced as the new host of the TV show PULP COMEDY, taking over from Mike King.

PAUL EGO started his breakfast radio career 11 years ago when he joined the KIM & CORBETT SHOW on Auckland’s MoreFM. During the 6 years Paul worked with Jeremy Corbett and Kim Adamson he could be heard as many of the shows regular characters including Bob & Noelene Bond and Steve Pervin Crocodile Humper.

In 2006 PAUL EGO was poached by THE ROCK for the MORNING RUMBLE Breakfast Show. Since his arrival ‘The Rumble’ have won ‘BEST ENTERTAINMENT SHOW Metropolitan’ at the NZ Radio Awards 3 years in a row. This of course could be just a coincidence.

PAUL EGO is also now well known as the Captain of Team 1 on the top-rating TV show ’7DAYS’. The NZ Herald recently had this to say about Ego on the show: “The MVP of the 7Days squad must be Ego. The unfeasibly tall comedian has proved to be the shows quickest and often dirtiest wit. He really should have his own fanclub”

PAUL EGO is 45 years old and lives on Aucklands North Shore with his beautiful wife Janine and their delightful yet destructive sons Gabriel & Isaac.

FAQ:

WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE COMEDY?
I left school in 7th form and used my high grades to secure a job at my local 4 Square. The novelty of free ice-creams and pies wore off after 3 years so I left for a job as Mail Clerk at the Central Post Office in Auckland. Because I have the dimensions of a giraffe a desk job didn’t really suit me so I followed in the footsteps of my Grandfather and began a Signwriting Apprenticeship. Did that for 5 years and became a qualified tradesman then went to London with my wife. There I not only did Signwriting but ran the staff bar at one of the UK’s largest Advertising Agencies. It was in London that I did my first stand-up comedy gig.

WHAT’S THE DUMBEST THING YOU’VE EVER DONE?
I flicked the lit end of a cigarette down the leg of my shorts once. Jumping up and down on yourself trying to douse a testicular furnace is not a good look. I also fell over drunk in front of my father-in-law a couple of years back. That’s really not the sort of thing you should be doing when you’re 42.
